We love Smoke Signals so much that we make a point to go whenever we're in the area. It's the best BBQ around. Make sure to check it out and stop by for a drink!
We visit the John Brown State Historic Site each time we visit the Adirondacks. John Brown was a fervent abolitionist, to the point that he believed only armed action would force the country to give up the barbarity of slavery. After one conversation with Brown, Frederick Douglass became convinced that only armed struggle would free the slaves in America. His legacy as an Upstate New Yorker, poor but adamant in his beliefs, lives on through contemporary lessons present at the site. We urge you to visit on your way in or out of the area.
Not in the mood to do a ton of hiking (lame! but Zach would understand)? Take a drive up the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway and reach the summit by car! We've only driven up (not hiked it as well like Mount Washington in NH), so make sure your brakes are good to go before taking the drive up!
Looking for the perfect, easy-moderate hike with breathtaking views? Take one of Alex's favorite hikes -- Ampersand Mountain! A historic marker at the top marking a former fire tower, where the 'Hermit of Ampersand' stood watch dutifully until his death at the age of 73, and the views, make this worth it. Look up the 'Hermit of Ampersand' to learn more and make this hike a priority if you do any hiking!
One of our favorite bars is The Great Hall Bar in Hotel Saranac, located in Saranac Lake. While it's about a 15 minute drive, it's the perfect bar to relax with a loved one and enjoy a drink while listening to classical music and chatting it up.
Best Italian in town! Call ahead to make a reservation, though!
Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980; the 1980 Games were the last to occur in a city of less than 15,000 inhabitants. Come see what Lake Placid's Olympic legacy is all about, including the Miracle on Ice!
